Kenya’s Cabinet has approved the construction of a KShs4.1 billion ($40 million) cable cars project to ease movement of passengers between Mombasa Island and the mainland

According to a statement from Kenya’s cabinet, the project is to be funded by a Kenyan and Austrian company. It will charge commuters a fee before ceding the investment to the government after 25 years.

The cars will reduce the existing journey made by the ferry across the 500-metre Likoni Channel from 10 minutes to two minutes and will be able to carry up to 11,000 passengers an hour.

The only cable cars in sub-Saharan Africa are in Nigeria and South Africa.
